I've been thinking...

What is the time frame for people to 'get it?'

This is a question I have been asking myself for quite a while.
As a church, it is important that we make sure that people know they matter to God (another catch phrase that seems to be popular lately). I never want to diminish the importance of this concept by any means. Many people don't fully understand that that they matter to ANYBODY let alone God.

Ok, once we have that established then what? Well, we need to make sure they are taking their next steps in the right direction. What is that direction? Toward Christ, of course. So far, so good... How do we get closer to Christ? By getting to know him better, ie: studying the Word for one thing.

We all know that the Bible can be spun in many different directions, this is obvious, due to the number of different denominations that we have. So this leads us to the importance of confronting sin for what it is; a detriment to our spiritual growth, and a constant inroad for satan's influence in our (mine included) lives. So if confronting sin is vital to spiritual growth, (and it is) why, as a church are we so timid when it comes to speaking out about it???

I have asked this question to a few of my friends who are leaders in the emergent church and I get different versions of the same answer almost every time. In essence they say is that we should be patient with those who don't 'get it' yet. I can track with that as well...to a point... you definitely don't want to give them a drink with a fire hose while they are still trying to take their first sips. I do have a couple of questions though:
First, if we don't confront specific sin, how will they know what it is?

Let me give you a couple of specific examples:
One that comes to mind is abortion. This seems to be a hot button that the emergent church doesn't want to deal with. When I have asked church leaders why, I get a variety of reasons, including, "We don't want to offend those that have gone through it." My response to that is, "WHAT????" We are missing a golden opportunity to present God's grace to those that have repented and can't yet forgive themselves, and opportunity for conviction to those that have not repented and see nothing wrong with it. "But what if they get offended and leave?" This isn't an issue, due to the number of times I have heard from our own platform, "If you don't like what we are doing here, you need to find another place you can support".
When Jesus confronted the woman at the well, he was not shy in pointing out the fact that she was living a sinful lifestyle and he told her that point blank. The fact is, that He did it in such a way as to show Her his love, yet without mincing words. I have only heard it mentioned a couple of times from our platform, and then only fleetingly.

Another that comes to mind is homosexuality. This seems to be such a hot button, that very few emergent churches want to even say the word, let alone discuss it. In my opinion, it is because the gay rights movement has done such a good job marketing themselves that they are able to successfully label anyone who speaks out against them as bigoted and intolerant. They have lumped their detractors into the same category as racists, and who wants to be accused of that?
Everybody knows that being racist is totally against what we as Christians stand for. As I see it, we are allowing them to define us instead of getting our definition of who we are from God's Word.

My other question is; If we don't confront specific sin, how much time do they get to "get it" by osmosis? None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. We speak a lot about God's grace and I for one would not be here without it, but the fact of the matter is that we will not receive it unless we ask for it, and we won't know to ask for it until we realize that we need it.
Some other ones we seem to avoid that come to mind are, living together outside of marriage, taking God's name in vain, eternal consequences of sin (Hell), eternal reward of Salvation (Heaven), to name a few.
I'm told that if we just continue to show them Christ, they will eventually 'get it'. But my question is, how will they know unless they have heard. We can't always form deep relationships with everyone in hope that we can eventually disciple them into spiritual maturity. When the rich young ruler came to Jesus in the middle of the night, Jesus didn't say "hey wait a minute, let's go get some coffee and form a relationship before I hit you with what it will take to follow me." He told him right then and there. His message was rejected and He let him walk away. I'm sure that not only did the young man have a heavy heart, but Jesus did too, yet he still let him walk.

I am convinced that the reason that we don't confront sin more than we do, is because we don't want to confront...period. We are more concerned with turning people off than speaking the truth IN LOVE. Jesus confronted in anger, in frustration, and even resorted to name-calling on occasion, but he still loved them enough to confront.

It is our job to confront, it is the Holy Spirit's job to convict.

They ARE crazy!!!

WASHINGTON - Just when liberals thought it was safe to start identifying themselves as such, an acclaimed, veteran psychiatrist is making the case that the ideology motivating them is actually a mental disorder.
"Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded," says Dr. Lyle Rossiter, author of the new book, "The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness." "Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave."
While political activists on the other side of the spectrum have made similar observations, Rossiter boasts professional credentials and a life virtually free of activism and links to "the vast right-wing conspiracy."
For more than 35 years he has diagnosed and treated more than 1,500 patients as a board-certified clinical psychiatrist and examined more than 2,700 civil and criminal cases as a board-certified forensic psychiatrist. He received his medical and psychiatric training at the University of Chicago .
Rossiter says the kind of liberalism being displayed by the two major candidates for the Democratic Party presidential nomination can only be understood as a psychological disorder.
"A social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity - as liberals do," he says. "A political leader who understands human nature will not ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population - as liberals do. And a legislator who understands human nature will not create an environment of rules which over-regulates and over-taxes the nation's citizens, corrupts their character and reduces them to wards of the state - as liberals do."
Dr. Rossiter says the liberal agenda preys on weakness and feelings of inferiority in the population by:

creating and reinforcing perceptions of victimization;

satisfying infantile claims to entitlement, indulgence and compensation;

augmenting primitive feelings of envy;

rejecting the sovereignty of the individual, subordinating him to the will of the government.

"The roots of liberalism - and its associated madness - can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind," he says. "When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious."

A Little Gun History Lesson

I wish I knew who wrote this so I could give them credit for it. The facts are indeed true. We are 2 seats away from a filibuster-proof Congress where the Libs can ram-rod through any legislation they please at will. It's no secret that they have wanted our guns for years and will stop at nothing to get them. Read on:

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million 'educated' people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

It will never happen here? I bet the Aussies said that too! While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it. You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late! The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind him of this history lesson.

During W.W.II the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED! Note: Admiral Yamamoto who crafted the attack on Pearl Harbor had attended Harvard U 1919-1921 & was Naval Attaché to the U. S. 1925-28. Most of our Navy was destroyed at Pearl Harbor & our Army had been deprived of funding & was ill prepared to defend the country.It was reported that when asked why Japan did not follow up the Pearl Harbor attack with an invasion of the U. S. Mainland, his reply was that he had lived in the U. S. & knew that almost all households had guns.
