Imagine that you are standing in the middle of a circle that is about 6 feet in diameter. Now imagine that there is another circle around that, only it's 12 feet in diameter. Repeat this process until you have several progressively larger circles all around you with you in the very middle.

Now picture 1,2 or 3 people in your inner circle. Those are the ones that your heart beats in unison with. They know everything about you. It does no good to fake it with them because they can see right through you. They know you so well they can almost read your thoughts. They might be your spouse, a parent or sibling, or your dearest friend in the whole world.

The next circle contains a few more people who are your very dearest friends. You don't see them every day, but they are near and dear to your heart and you would never want to do life without them.

In the next circle are those that you are acquainted with. They are people you don't see very much but when you do it's always a good time of sharing and laughter.
And so it goes with each circle further away. From dear friends in the center to total strangers a few circles out.

But WAIT! As your life goes on many of the occupants of those circles move in and out. They are not static, they are changing. Relationships change, personalities clash, friendships are reignited and new ones are made.

Recently I have been reacquainted with my high school class of 1976 via e-mail. There are names that come up that I haven't heard in years and stories that I had long ago forgotten. Every graduation day, the promise is made that "We will always keep in touch" and "We'll always be best friends." Then life happens as it always does. College, military, trade school, marriage, kids, careers, t-ball, drivers ed, broken hearts, and skinned knees. Sometimes even divorce and remarriage. The circles change occupants over and over.

This past week I had an opportunity to get re-acquainted with a childhood friend. His name is Scott and we lived next door to each other. It was good to see him and I'm looking forward to spending more time with him. He is a biker too and I told him that we'll go for a ride in a few weeks and I can hardly wait. It will be fun to reminisce and get caught up.

My class of '76 is having a mini-reunion over Memorial Day weekend, but I won't be able to attend. I will be spending time with my inner-circle family in Nashville that weekend. It will be great to see my son and his family and spend time with my precious grandson, and yet I'm a bit sad that I can't go to the reunion. There is a tug in my heart that I can't explain. It is a desire to see them and re-connect.
I'm glad that the circles aren't static. I believe that God brings people into our lives for a certain time and a certain purpose and that we touch each others lives for a reason and a season that only He knows because He sees the bigger picture.
