My Motorcycle...and me...


I guess I need to clear up a misconception regarding my blog. It is NOT a political blog per-se. It is a blog containing stuff I think about. It just so happens that I think a lot about politics and the state of our country right now. However...I also think about other stuff sometimes. Today it was about family, friends and motorcycles.

I went for a ride today with my nephew who just obtained his first bike. Yes, unfortunately it was a sport bike, (a crotch rocket as they are sometimes known, but he'll grow out of that...JUST KIDDING!) but none the less two wheels, a seat, and a motor. As we rode the back roads of Marshall county, I was reminded again what it was like to do something you love with someone you love. It brought me back to the time last summer when I would ride with my son before he moved to Dallas, and the times when I, and a group of my friends would mount up and ride to no particular destination, other than to have lunch somewhere and enjoy the road, the wind, the curves, and the rumbling of our pipes. Most of all, it is the joy we share in just being together bonded by doing something that we love.

Last weekend I got to ride with one of my best friends, John during a ride that he helped organize for our church. We don't get to see each other much anymore as our lives have gone off in different directions, but we have ridden many miles together over the years and as we rode together again in staggered formation, I motioned for him to pull up beside and ride next to me. As I glanced over to my right he was there wheel to wheel at 60 MPH and there was a feeling that came over me that no matter what else is going on in my crazy life right now, for this time and this moment, all is right in the world because he was there.

There is something about having 700 pounds of chrome, steel and horsepower between your legs that is difficult to describe. It is a sense of freedom, of power, of being alive to the fullest. You feel like you are actually a part of the road, and that this pulsating beast below you is actually an extension of your body that allows you to go into sensory overload to see, touch, hear, and even taste everything around you.

Some people dance, others climb mountains or ride the winds at full sail, I ride my motorcycle. Every now and then I see a bumper sticker that has a Bar-and-Shield and it says, 'If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand." I couldn't have said it better.-TI
