Dan Coats...I think not...

I recently received a post card in the mail from the NRA regarding Coats. It stated that they are Not endorsing him for his Senate run.
I have to confess that I didn't know much about him, but figured I would probably vote for him because I had heard of him before, I mean, name recognition is important right? WOW, for someone who likes to stay up on things political, I found out that I had not done my homework very well where this guy is concerned.

This is part of what the postcard from the NRA said:
"In 1993, when then-President Bill Clinton had launched an all-out assault on the Second Amendment, then-Senator Dan Coats voted for the Feinstein Amendment to ban the purchase, sale and transfer of certain semi-automatic rifles (mislabeled "assault weapons") and for the Brady Bill to impose a national waiting period for handgun purchases."

I called his campaign office and spoke to his right hand man, Mike Blovanelle (not sure if I spelled the name right). He told me that Coats has not made any secret of his 2nd amendment related votes, and that what I heard was true.

My thought on this is why then, should conservatives vote for him???

I dug a bit deeper and found this chart on his voting record the last time he was in the Senate. As you can see, it is pretty sad.

I told Mike that I could not help but be a bit suspicious of his motivation for wanting to represent Indiana again especially after moving out of the state for all these years. We have a couple of top notch candidates in Marlin Stutzman and John Hostettler, so why did he feel he needed to jump back into this? He told me that it was because Coats felt we needed more conservative leadership back in Washington and that he had to do it for the good of the people of Indiana and for the nation. I wish that I had pulled this voting chart up BEFORE I spoke to him because his past record is anything BUT conservative.

I asked him if he would have Coats call me and he asked for my number so we'll see if he does. I'm not holding my breath, but if he does, I'll let you know.
